New Zealand Salary and Hourly Rate Calculator
Understanding your hourly rate and how it compares to the legal minimum wage is essential for both employees and employers in New Zealand. This calculator helps you convert between annual salary and hourly pay, factor in the mandatory 8% holiday pay, and check compliance with the Minimum Wage Act 1983.
How the Calculation Works
The core calculation is based on your agreed hours and weeks of work. To find an hourly rate from an annual salary, the formula is: Annual Salary ÷ Paid Weeks per Year ÷ Hours per Week. If the stated salary includes holiday pay, we first deduct the 8% to find the base salary before performing this division. Conversely, to find an annual salary from an hourly rate, the formula is: Hourly Rate × Hours per Week × Weeks per Year.
Holiday pay is a critical component. Under the Holidays Act 2003, most employees are entitled to at least 8% of their gross earnings as holiday pay. This can be paid as a separate lump sum or included in your regular pay (known as "pay-as-you-go" or "rolled-up" holiday pay). If it is included, your employment agreement must explicitly state this.
The final step is a minimum wage check. New Zealand has three minimum wage categories: Adult, Starting-out, and Training. The calculator compares your total hourly rate (including any rolled-up holiday pay) against the applicable minimum wage rate for your category.
Example Calculation
Imagine a full-time employee offered a $60,000 annual salary, which includes the 8% holiday pay. They work 40 hours per week for 52 weeks.
- First, find the base salary before holiday pay: $60,000 ÷ 1.08 = $55,555.56.
- Then, calculate the base hourly rate: $55,555.56 ÷ 52 ÷ 40 = $26.71 per hour.
- Since holiday pay is included, the total hourly rate is the same as the base rate: $26.71.
- This is compared to the adult minimum wage (e.g., $23.15). The rate is above the minimum, so it is compliant.
Common Scenarios
Part-time or Term-time Work: If you work fewer than 52 weeks a year (e.g., a school term-time role), adjust the "Paid weeks per year" input. This will accurately reflect your annual income and hourly rate.
Starting-out Workers: Employees eligible for the starting-out minimum wage (typically workers under 20 in their first 6 months with an employer, subject to specific conditions) must be paid at least that rate. Ensure your calculated rate meets this threshold.
Below Minimum Wage: If the calculator shows a shortfall, the proposed pay is illegal. The employer must increase the hourly rate or annual salary to meet the legal minimum.
Preparing Your Employment Documents
Once you have calculated a fair rate, it's time to formalize the agreement. An Employment Offer Letter is used to make a formal job offer, outlining key terms like job title, salary, hours, and start date. For the ongoing employment relationship, an Individual Employment Agreement is the comprehensive contract that details all rights and responsibilities. If you need to change an existing contract's pay rate, an Employment Agreement Amendment is the appropriate document.
Using this calculator helps ensure the financial terms in these documents are clear, correct, and compliant with New Zealand employment law.
